WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SITE PREPARATION

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SITE PREPARATION

One of the most crucial aspects of building a shed is ensuring that it’s built on a solid, level foundation. Proper site preparation can make the difference between a structure that lasts for decades and one that quickly deteriorates. At Urban Sheds, we emphasize the importance of setting up the right base for your shed to remain structurally sound and functional over the long term.

Why Shed Foundations Matter

A shed without a solid foundation can experience a variety of issues. It may settle unevenly, which can lead to doors sticking, windows not functioning properly, and long-term structural problems. Moisture can also accumulate under an improperly built shed, increasing the risk of mold, mildew, and wood rot. For your shed to stand strong and avoid these problems, starting with the right foundation is key.

Common Shed Foundation Options

There are several ways to ensure your shed is built on a stable base. The most common methods include:

1. Cement Blocks

Using cement blocks is a simple and effective way to provide a sturdy base for your shed. This method is ideal for slightly uneven or level ground and can be adjusted easily to accommodate minor variations in the landscape. Cement blocks evenly distribute the weight of the shed and create a reliable foundation without requiring extensive excavation or site work.

2. Stone Pad

A stone pad is a popular option for homeowners looking for an extremely durable and long-lasting foundation. The stone pad consists of a compacted layer of crushed stone that provides excellent drainage and stability. This option works well for sheds of all sizes and is particularly beneficial for areas with wetter soil conditions, as the stone pad helps prevent water from pooling under the shed.

While a stone pad offers a high-quality foundation, it’s not always necessary. Many shed companies push for a stone pad with every shed because it simplifies the delivery process, especially when sheds are prebuilt and transported to the site. However, when sheds are built onsite, as they are with Urban Sheds, we can often achieve an equally solid base using other methods like cement blocks.

3. Concrete Slab

For the ultimate in durability and stability, a concrete slab is the best choice. A concrete foundation is ideal for larger sheds or when you need a completely level surface. It’s more permanent and typically more expensive than other options, but it provides unmatched strength and longevity. This type of foundation is recommended for heavy-use sheds that will store machinery, vehicles, or equipment.

What If Your Shed Site Isn’t Level?

Not every yard is perfectly level, and that’s okay! If your site is significantly out of level—12 inches or more—it’s important to consult with one of our local Urban Sheds craftsmen to determine the best solution. In most cases, the recommended approach is to install a level stone pad, which can compensate for the uneven ground and provide a solid, stable foundation.

For sites with up to 12 inches of unevenness, we often use a gridwork of cement blocks. This approach allows us to make precise adjustments, ensuring that the shed sits level while avoiding the need for extensive excavation or major site changes. If you’re designing your shed using our 3D Shed Configurator, be sure to check the box for “Blocking to Level the Site” to ensure we account for any necessary adjustments.

Why Onsite Construction Simplifies the Process

One advantage of onsite shed construction is the flexibility it offers when preparing the foundation. Since the shed is built directly on your property, we can easily distribute blocking (cement blocks) evenly under the structure right from the start. This method provides a very solid base without the need for heavy machinery or complicated delivery logistics.

When sheds are delivered fully assembled, it’s much more difficult—if not impossible—to properly install blocking or make fine adjustments on the fly. As a result, many companies push to sell a stone pad with every prebuilt shed, as it’s easier to place the structure on a pre-leveled surface. However, with Urban Sheds’ onsite construction, we can tailor the foundation to your specific yard, saving you time and money.
