  • Maybe. Every city and county has its own building codes, zoning requirements, and setback rules, so the need for a permit depends on your specific location and the size and use of your shed. Because these regulations vary widely—even between neighboring towns—we recommend checking with your local building department to confirm what applies to your property.

To make this easier, you can use this AI prompt to help you research your local requirements:

    AI Prompt:
“Do I need a building permit for a [shed size] accessory structure at [your address or city, state]? Please include setback rules, size limits, zoning considerations, and any exemptions for storage sheds in this specific location.”

If a permit is required, the homeowner is responsible for submitting and securing the permit. Urban Sheds can assist by providing site plans, renderings, and any documentation needed for your application.

If you’d like help preparing your drawings or have questions about the process, just let us know—we’re here to support you.

  • The ideal site prep depends on the condition of your yard and the size of your shed.

    • Flat, level, and clear yard:
If your yard is already flat, level, and free of debris, no site prep is needed. Our team can build directly on the existing ground.

    • Slightly out of level (10×12 and smaller):
For smaller sheds, concrete blocks are usually the most efficient and cost-effective option. They work well when the slope is minor and provide a stable, long-lasting foundation.

    • Larger sheds or uneven yards:
For sheds larger than 10×12, we recommend a crushed stone pad. It offers better support, drainage, and long-term stability for heavier structures.

    • Significantly sloped yards:
If the ground is far out of level, you may need a small retaining wall to create a stable, level build area before the shed is installed.
